With the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung could address one of its predecessor’s weaknesses with major upgrades to its triple-camera array.
This is according to a prominent tech leak Ice worldwhich claims that the next-generation Galaxy Fold will have a 50-megapixel main camera and add extra zoom to the optical zoom, bringing it up to 3x.
In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 features three 12MP lenses and 2x optical zoom. These weren’t exactly underperformers, but they did feel a little tough on the $1,799 phone.

On paper, that’s still far from Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra with its quad-camera array, led by a 108MP main sensor. But Ice Universe thinks the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a strong impact.
He added: “Samsung’s most powerful 3x camera ever, more powerful than the S22 Ultra.” Tweet follow.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Could it be better?
With foldable phones, there’s a double pressure not to exaggerate the camera specs.
First, it’s very likely that Samsung is very careful to avoid making its foldable phones expensive, and using cameras to the maximum can add a premium to an already expensive phone. But perhaps most important is the extra bulk that more serious camera hardware adds. Foldable phones are really heavy, which is rather thick when closed because they are basically two back-to-back phones.
This, according to Ice Universe, is the reason Samsung is concerned about the use of foldable cameras.
“Don’t expect drastic changes in camera hardware from this foldable phone that weighs less than 260g, Samsung’s philosophy is to make the fold slim and easy to use”, chirp. If 260g is the actual weight, that’s an incredible feat, by the way – it will be only 20g heavier than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
“The configuration of the camera is sufficient, the rest depends on software optimization,” Ice Universe said. And while this may sound like a conditional exit, you can go a long way in improving software.
On paper, multiple generations of Google Pixel clearly had average camera sensor specs. But thanks to their superb image processing, they routinely end up in lists of the best camera phones.
Most likely in response to somewhat disappointing tweets, Ice Universe backed Samsung’s alleged strategy. “You want it all, you want a big camera, a 10x lens, a 5,000mAh battery, and an S Pen,” chirp. You can do it, but it weighs 350 grams and is 18 millimeters thick. Foldable phones are meaningless.”
Of course, this does not appear to be Samsung’s strategy. Recently, the so-called 360-degree images gave us our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, and it looks very promising indeed. We will likely know more in the second half of the year when it is expected to launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and possibly the Galaxy Watch 5.
