A jury has returned its verdict in Johnny Depp’s favor in a $50 million defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The jury ruled that Heard smeared Depp with malicious intent in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed claiming that she was a victim of domestic violence.

Depp received $15 million in total – $10 million in damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

The jury also awarded Heard $2 million in damages, ruling that Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman defamed her when he called her abuse allegations a “hoax” in a British newspaper.

Depp, who was on an overseas tour, did not appear in the courtroom for sentencing. Heard, however, was present and appeared to be suspicious when the judgment was read.

“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words,” Amber Heard said in a statement following the ruling. “I am saddened that the mountain of evidence is still not enough to stand up to the unequal power, influence and control of my ex-husband.

“I am even more disappointed by what this ruling means to other women. It is a setback. It turns back the clock to a time when women who spoke out and who spoke out could be shamed and humiliated. It hinders the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously,” Heard followed.

I am sad that I lost this case. But I’m still sad because I seem to have really lost my thought as an American – to speak freely and openly.”

Depp also released his own statement: “Six years ago, my life, the lives of my children, the lives of the people closest to me and also the lives of the people who supported me for so many years and believed in me changed forever. Everything in the blink of an eye,” he wrote.

“False, dangerous and criminal allegations have been leveled at me through the media, resulting in an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges have been brought against me. He has already traveled around the world twice within a nanosecond and has had a seismic effect on my life and career.”

Six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am really humbled.

From the beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something I owe to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. Depp concluded his speech by saying, “I feel at peace knowing that I have finally accomplished this.”

The trial, which lasted six weeks, saw actors and ex-husbands compete through their legal teams to portray the other as an aggressive abuser in their relationship, all while maintaining that they are the real victim.

Depp, 58, sued Heard, 36, for defamation in Fairfax County Court over an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post describing herself as a “public figure who represents domestic violence.”

Although Heard never mentioned Depp’s name in the article, his attorneys still claim it had devastating effects on his career, reputation, and personal life.

“Your presence shows where your priorities are,” a Heard spokesperson said. “Johnny Depp plays guitar in the UK while Amber Heard awaits verdict in Virginia. Depp takes his laughs and his lack of seriousness on his tour.”

In their closing statements on May 27, both teams pressed the jury to find a verdict in their favour.

Depp’s team insisted that Heard lied in public and in her testimony, claiming that she devised a false narrative that made Depp look like an alcoholic and drug-addicted “monster”. In his testimony, Depp said he never had any drug use issues (except for Roxicodone, which he claims he is no longer addicted to).

He claimed all his life that he had never hit a woman in his life.
