A study warns that irregular meal times in the evening may increase the risk of stroke

A recent study found that the timing of your evening meal may affect your risk of fatal stroke

A new study has found that eating meals at irregular times in the evening may increase the risk of stroke.

A recent study, published in the journal Nutrients, examined the relationship between dinner timing and risk of death from stroke, coronary heart disease, and total cardiovascular disease.

What did the researchers find?

The study evaluated 28,625 males and 43,213 females, ages 40 to 79, free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancers at baseline.

The participants were categorized into three groups:

  • Group Early Dinner (before 8pm)
  • Irregular dinner group (the time is irregular)
  • Late dinner group (after 8pm).

Data were collected through a nutritional assessment questionnaire and compared with mortality data for each participant.

The researchers found that those who ate their evening meal at irregular times had a higher risk of dying from hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when blood vessels within the skull rupture and bleed in and around the brain.

No significant association was found between dinner timing and the risk of death from other types of stroke, such as ischemic stroke, and no evidence to suggest a link between meal timing and coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease risk.

“We found that following an irregular dinner timing compared to eating dinner before 8:00 pm was associated with an increased risk of mortality from hemorrhagic stroke,” the researchers wrote.

To our knowledge, our study is the first to investigate the relationship between dinner timing and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

“In this prospective, population-based cohort study, after adjusting for risk factors for cardiovascular disease, irregular dinner timing was associated with an increased risk of mortality from hemorrhagic stroke compared with early dinner consumers.”

They added that they found positive associations between irregular dinner timing and risk of total and hemorrhagic stroke and total cardiovascular mortality among people with a BMI of 23-24.9.

What BMI is a healthy weight?

The most commonly used way to check if your weight is healthy is your body mass index. For most adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 means you are at a healthy weight, according to the NHS. Those with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 mean you are overweight.

The NHS warns that the main cause of hemorrhagic stroke is high blood pressure, which can weaken the arteries in the brain and make them more likely to split or rupture. Factors that increase the risk of developing high blood pressure include:

  • overweight
  • Drinking large amounts of alcohol
  • smoking
  • lack of exercise
  • Stress

The NHS adds: “Hemorrhagic strokes can also be caused by the rupture of a balloon-like dilatation in a blood vessel (brain aneurysm) or an abnormally formed blood vessel in the brain.”

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

The main symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the word FAST:

  • FAce – the face may have fallen to one side, the person may not be able to smile, or their mouth or eye may fall off
  • arms – a person having a stroke may not be able to raise their arms and keep them there due to weakness or numbness in one arm
  • sSpeech – their speech may be confused or distorted, or the person may not be able to speak at all even though they appear to be awake. They may also have problems understanding what you are saying to them.
  • Time – Time to call 999 immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms

The sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely.
