(Pocket-lint) Samsung may have already announced its flagship Galaxy S range, along with additions to its mid-range Galaxy A smartphones this year, but we’re still waiting for updates for the foldable Galaxy Z range.
Rumors swirled about both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. We’ve covered the Z Fold 4 similar to the book in a separate feature, but here we’re focusing on the horizontal foldable phone – the Galaxy Z Flip 4. That’s all we’ve heard so far.
Release date and price
- August / September 2022
- Cheaper than the Z Flip 3?
At the moment, there are no specific rumors indicating a specific launch date for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, although it is expected to be announced alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in August 2022 or September 2022.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 were both announced in August 2021 before going on sale at the end of August 2021. With August previously allotted to the Galaxy Note series, it makes sense for the Galaxy Z Fold series to take that slot since there won’t be a Note this year. .
In terms of price, we expect the Galaxy Z Flip 4 to come in the same model as its predecessor, which started at $999 in the US and £949 in the UK. There was a rumor that the device would see a price cut which is what we are of course here for, but for now, nothing has been confirmed.
- Improved IP rating?
- Larger external screen
- four colors
The design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip hasn’t changed much since it was first launched – except for the cover screen – and it looks like we’ll be saying the same next year as well. It is said that there will be some minor tweaks to the overall measurements and possibly a slightly larger external display, but other than that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will look similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
One rumor claimed that the hinge has been redesigned, and that the Galax Z Flip 4 will be lighter in weight as a result. There was also the suggestion of better water and dust resistance.
Renders suggested that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will continue to offer a premium design with a horizontal fold and square edges. It is expected that there will be a panel at the top of the rear that will house the dual rear camera and a display, while the internal display is expected to have a camera in the middle at the top – it is not yet clear if it will be a punch-hole camera or under the display camera.
According to rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 will come in four colors, including light blue, light purple, gold and space gray. It is not yet known if there will be a bespoke version of the Flip 4 that will allow you to mix color and max options for a more premium look.
- 2 inch + external screen
- 6.7 inch main screen
- UPC camera?
There has been some talk of a larger cover screen coming to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, with rumors suggesting it could be at least 2-inch. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 1.9-inch display and a 6.7-inch main screen when opened.
In terms of accuracy and other specifications, the rumors have not detailed that information yet. The Galaxy Z Flip 3’s home screen displayed Full HD+ resolution, which we’ve come to expect from the Z Flip 4 as well.
There have also been some rumors that Samsung is working on an under-display camera for the Z Flip 4, although nothing has been confirmed yet. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a UPC, although it’s not spectacular, so we hope to see some improvements before they make their way to the Z Flip 4.
Hardware and Specifications
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus?
- At least 8GB of RAM
- 3700 mAh battery?
Like most flagship smartphones already launched in 2022, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, although it is also possible to opt for the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has 8GB of RAM and a 128GB and 256GB storage option, so the Z Flip 4 will probably at least offer that. There’s also a 3,300mAh battery capacity, although it’s claimed the Galaxy Z Flip 4 may increase this to 3,700mAh, which would be a nice bump.
Based on other reports, it looks like the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will stick with the physical fingerprint sensor inside the power button instead of opting for a lower display solution this time around.
- Dual Rear Camera
- Front camera – hole or UPC
So far, there are no rumors about the cameras that we can expect to see on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G comes with a dual camera on the outside with two 12MP sensors – one a wide-angle lens with an f/1.8 aperture and the other an ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture. slot.
There is also a 10MP selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture.
We were expecting the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 to offer at least the same thing as its predecessor, but there will likely be some improvements as well, whether that’s hardware, software, or both.
