Trotz has tools to flip the jets

Make no mistake: Tuesday’s session between Barry Trotz and the Winnipeg Jets was as much about the prestigious coach interviewing the hockey club as it was the other way around. The truth is, the veteran bench boss with a Stanley Cup on his resume will have no shortage of suitors, and work at True North has stalled persuading a Manitoba producer to go home.

Philadelphia, which is said to have a chat of its own with Trotz on Friday, and Vegas are two other potential landing areas with job openings and a desire to make a big splash in their markets after disappointing years.

Gentlemen, start selling!

Although it was a positive sign that Winnipeg got its first shot, expect TrotzWatch 2022 to last for at least a few more days, maybe even weeks. The decision is finally in his hands. And only a producer Dauphin knows what would constitute a perfect fit at this point in his decorating career.

It’s not hard to imagine what a conversation from Mark Chipman, Kevin Sheffield and Company would have looked like. Opportunity to work in his backyard for one who has deep roots. An enthusiastic and educated fan base. Get the full support of loyal ownership and management to continue spending up to the maximum salary cap. 2020 Vezina Award winner Connor Hellebuyck at the height of his career. A talented heart attacker with the likes of Kyle Connor, Nikolai Eilers and Pierre-Luc Dubois just beginning to realize their potential. A group of promising youngsters such as Cole Perfetti and Phil Heinola.

We’ve heard that Trotz has aspirations to eventually move from coaching to a higher role with an organization, and you have to imagine that this kind of arrangement at Winnipeg would make very much sense for all parties. No doubt his services will come with a high price, but I can’t imagine any scenario where it boils down to cold, hard cash and bidding on planes. They realize the immeasurable value, both on and off the ice, that a person of Trotz descent would bring to a roster and hockey-obsessed community desperately in need of a shake-up.

So we wait. Whether it is Trotz, or anyone else, who is the decision maker starting next season, it is important to remember the many challenges the next coach will face. A good hiring is definitely a great start. But it does not guarantee success in any way, especially when expectations are immediately raised.

There are many key questions to answer, and I suspect Trotz may have raised some of them during his session earlier this week.

Let’s start with how portable this group really is. There were times last year I wondered if even the immortal Scotty Bowman – one of two coaches in NHL history to have had more wins than Trotz – could have made this talented but deeply flawed team go in the same direction, taking in Consider their erratic and disturbing play. Comments from a lot of frustrated players who openly questioned core issues like motivation and preparation. Those were big red flags that were raised in public. One could only imagine what was being said behind closed doors.

Everyone in charge should know what they are going to step into—and what kind of slate moves, if any, might be required to ensure that this never heads south again in a hurry at the first sign of adversity.

Everyone in charge should know what they are going to step into—and what kind of slate moves, if any, might be required to ensure that this never heads south again in a hurry at the first sign of adversity.

Which brings me to the case of a disgruntled franchisor, Mark Scheifele, who certainly looked like a guy who wanted a one-way ticket out of town given his odd post-season media availability. Although Cheveldayoff was not specifically asked to trade, it is certainly implied. I think the chances are high that he played his last game in a Jets jersey, but perhaps a new voice – especially a great voice like Trotz – might give everyone pause to think before pulling the trigger on a blockbuster movie that would shake the organization to its foundations.

Scheifele, 29, remains a point-per-game player with an impressive value contract that has two years left. Can the new coach bring out his best, and make him play a more inspiring two-way game that helps his team get over the hump? Trotz made Alexander Ovechkin do just that when they both won the Stanley Cup in 2018. Knowing where Scheifele is in the near future is a top priority. There’s also a big deal about Dubois’ next contract and what that looks like. Having a free suspended leash agent locked out for the long haul is a nice safety blanket for a new coach to inherit.

Scheifele is also part of a leadership group, along with replacement Josh Morrissey and captain Blake Wheeler, which will require adjustments, perhaps sooner rather than later. Morrissey is the undisputed man of defense, and he’s not going anywhere. Nor should he. But what is the succession plan from Scheifele and Wheeler, who also stayed two years on his deal before possibly retiring? And just how fast you can play, given the seemingly fractured nature of the franchise after a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs for the seventh time in 11 years.

Aside from Morrissey, there is also the case of Blue Line, which once again spent a lot of time chasing discus and rival players, in its own territory last year. Attention to defensive detail is critical, and this speaks to both the individuals and the systems used. What kind of changes would come, whether by trade, free agency, or even internally, to ensure that Hellebuyck was not constantly hung to dry?

One thing we do know about Trotz: This is an area where his teams usually thrive, which is another reason he and the Jets seem to have such a strong compatibility. That’s why I think the organization is taking a big step in trying to get him here.

They have some stiff competition. No doubt the Broad Street pessimists will try to flex their muscles, just as these bastards of Sin City will make their way out of all glamorous stops to lure him south. Whether Winnipeg wins the Trotz sweepstakes or has to resort to Plan B, there’s no doubt that the next coach will have not only many promising pieces to work with, but many problems to fix.

There is great pressure to correct this.
