It all came about by chance, but a die-hard Alberta couple of hockey fans found themselves celebrating their wedding Sunday night while overlooking the Oilers Watch Party at Ice District Plaza in downtown Edmonton.

Jasin Dhaliwal and his fiancée Manika Chopra-Dhaliwal have had their wedding plans for months now. In January, when they picked a pick-up location at a hotel in the Ice District, they had no idea Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames would be in the playoffs, let alone a second-round showdown in the epic Battle of Alberta.

Edmonton Oilers fan Jacin Daliwal and Calgary Flames fan Maneka Chopra Dhaliwal held their wedding overlooking the Ice District Plaza on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

“Unreal. I think it’s very exciting to be in Edmonton, she’s at our reception site and she’s just an example of our relationship,” said the bride, Chopra Dhaliwal.

“We are so excited. I love the energy here and we have people from Calgary and Edmonton coming to the reception. So it’s just reception talk. It’s very unique.”

The couple and some of their guests could be seen cheering for their respective teams Sunday night on a balcony overlooking the Moss Pit, where thousands of hockey fans were celebrating and watching Game 3 of the Battle of Alberta series.

“We’ve been planning this since January, so we had no idea it would end on the same day,” Dhaliwal said. “We found out right after Game 7 (of round one) when Calgary advanced… We were shocked. We didn’t know what to think. It was more exciting than anything.

We thought the probability of that happening was zero. There is no chance. We weren’t sure if the Oilers would go through the playoffs (back in January), let alone meet each other in the second round. It’s honestly just pure luck.”

Guests at Jasin Dhaliwal and Manika Chopra-Dhaliwal’s wedding cheer on their own teams as the Battle of Alberta takes place at Ice District Plaza on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

Perhaps the most interesting part about this unintended but very welcome circumstance is that the groom is a fan of Oilers and the bride a fan of Flames.

“We’ve been through this for five years now, so we kind of got used to it,” Dhaliwal told Global News while Game 3 was underway at Rogers Place on Sunday night.

“We realize that if our relationship continues to survive, I think we’ll be fine forever.”

And it so happened that the bride chose to wear a black and red dress – very appropriate for the occasion.

“I’m glad I wore red and black,” she said with a laugh. “I chose red and black last year so I loved it.”

By complete coincidence, Edmonton Oilers fan Jacin Dhaliwal and his engaged fan of Calgary Flames, Maneka Chopra Dhaliwal, had their wedding overlooking the Ice District Plaza on Sunday, May 22, 2022 as Game 3 of the Battle of Alberta series was taking place outside.

Although the outcome of the game was unknown when the pair spoke to Global News, they were expecting an epic reception, especially if the Edmonton Oilers were up front.

“I think he’s going to take the party to the next level tonight. That’s what we’re expecting…just with the energy downtown right now,” Dhaliwal said.

“We will remember this forever,” Chopra Dhaliwal added.
