First look: Orbea Urrun is a long-range electric tail – Pinkbike

Urrun means “far” in the spoken Basque language where Orbea is based. Their latest offering is a solid electric motor using the same Ride Synergy (RS) tuned as the Rise’s full suspension motor, limiting the assist to get more mileage out of the 540 Wh internal battery. Orbea says the battery will last for up to eight hours of riding with up to 3,500m of climb, which is pretty far in anyone’s book. If that’s not enough, there’s a 252Whr range-extended battery, boosting the range by nearly 50%.

Pedal pedals aren’t necessarily the most exciting thing for purist mountain bikers, but at a starting price of €3,799 / $4,299 / £3,499 it’s likely to appeal to a lot of people who get into the sport.

Engine and battery

The RS-tuned Orbea engine weighs the same as this standard Shimano EP8 unit, but because it develops lower torque (60 Nm instead of 85 Nm), this allows for the use of lighter components, especially in the drivetrain. Claimed weight for the top-spec Urrun 10 medium size, with tubes, is 19.6 kg / 43.2 lbs. The optional range extender battery, which costs 499 euros, weighs 1.4 kg and slots into the water bottle holder.

As always, the range of e-bikes varies a lot depending on assist mode, riding style, terrain, rider weight and more, so most riders wouldn’t approach that claim of 3500m vertically. But Orbea thinks the range with the internal battery should be plenty for most people.

With fast-rolling tires, a normal drivetrain, zero engine friction and a relatively manageable weight, there’s nothing stopping you from riding it with an empty battery.

In addition to being more economical with electrons and thus offering greater range, another Orbea claim behind the tuned RS engine is that it delivers its power in a more precise, proportional manner than a standard engine, making it feel like a conventional bike.


Frame details

Urrun uses a hydraulically formed alloy frame with soft-welds, similar to the Rise Hydro. Bottle cage heads on the seat tube and bottom tube mean you can carry a water bottle even when using the range extender. The downtube saves weight but that means removing the battery first involves removing the motor and you can just charge the battery into the bike.

The only thing that sets Urrun apart is the cable routing. It runs through a modified spacer just under the stem, through the headset and into the frame, so there are no ugly cable ports behind the head tube. Unlike similar systems, the cables don’t go through the stem itself, so it’s easy to swap the stem out, but the cable that connects the motor to the bar-mounted control unit goes through the stem and handlebar as well.

Electrical hardware is often used as a commuting and shopping tool, and the Urrun rear axle is compatible with accessory mounts for outriggers, trailers and carriers. I can see Urrun, especially the entry-level model, which attracts people who want one bike to run or commute during the week and explore on the weekend.


Engineering

Urrun isn’t trying to break the mold with its architecture. With a 445mm chainstay and 66-degree head angle, it should be easy enough to maneuver at low speeds. The 74.5-degree seat angle is relatively steep by hard-tail standards.
