Study shows that Urolithin A post-biologic improves muscle strength and exercise performance in middle-aged adults

Age-related muscle decline can start as early as 40 years of age and there are currently no effective interventions to counteract it other than exercise. An important new study was published today in Medicine Cell Reports showed that daily consumption of Urolithin A, Amazentis’ proprietary Mitopure, resulted in a significant improvement in muscle strength by 12% after four months. These findings also validate Mitopure’s benefits for muscle and mitochondrial health and show that it is safe and well-tolerated. Mitopure works by supporting cells’ ability to regenerate their own energy factories, mitochondria, during the aging process. Muscles have a great demand for energy and there are too many mitochondria in muscle cells.

Previous research has shown that Mitopure improves muscle endurance, reduces inflammation, and leads to healthy mitochondrial function in older adults 65 to 90 years old. This new, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in middle-aged adults 40 to 64 years of age (n = 88) in London, Ontario, Canada after obtaining approvals from Health Canada and an independent IRB. Participants were randomly assigned to receive daily supplementation with 500 mg, 1000 mg of Metopur or a placebo for 4 months. Muscle strength, exercise performance tests, and vital signs of healthy mitochondrial function and inflammation were assessed in skeletal muscle biopsies and blood plasma at baseline, 2 months and 4 months.

  • Two measures of skeletal muscle strength were improved in the supplement groups compared to the placebo group. Muscle strength in the hamstring skeletal muscle was significantly increased in both the 500 mg (+12%) and 1000 mg (+9.8%) groups. Muscle strength during knee flexion was also significantly improved at both the 500 mg (+ 10.6%) and 1000 mg (+ 10.5%) doses.
  • Clinically beneficial improvements in aerobic endurance (+10% in peak oxygen consumption [VO2]), physical performance (+33 meters in the 6-min walking test), and energy output (+5%) were observed in the 1000 mg group, although not statistically significant.

“These findings are exciting because this is the first in human evidence that Urolithin A repairs mitochondria via mitophagy and can translate into meaningful physiological benefits. Furthermore, the improvement in strength and exercise performance occurred in the absence of any changes to the participants’ exercise routine,” explained the professor. This is an important finding in longevity and muscle health research. Aging is associated with a decline in mitochondrial function, which can lead to decreased exercise capacity and muscle endurance and strength. Urolithin A is the first and only compound clinically proven to improve muscle function by regenerating mitochondria through a powerful quality control biological mechanism called mitophagy.
