Stress causes anxiety. Most of us get nervous about performance; To meet the expectations of others, both from co-workers and family members. We continue to judge if we can accept the challenge. We ask ourselves, do I have the skill, talent and tools to achieve the set goals. Through inner conversations with oneself, we reach a high level of stress that causes anxiety.

Stress and anxiety cannot be cast away from anyone’s life – they acquire a problem condition or a medical condition, when emotion overwhelms them. Stress can be a lifelong illness, if left untreated.

Stress can be both positive and negative. The adrenaline rush leads to extraordinary performance. The pressure to exercise self-control to do well falls into the realm of positive pressure. Positive stress is not likely to cause ulcers. Instead it heralds a state of general happiness. On the contrary, negative stress raises blood pressure, enhances pulse rate and reduces an individual’s high level of anxiety that is always harmful to health. When I look back at my career, I find that some of my best performance moments were when I was in a state of silent tension. Anxiety (stress) can release positive energy that allows the desired results to be achieved.

Stress stimulates work. Gives effect to creativity. For those who only perform when faced with a stressful environment, it is an elixir; The fountain of life. But this position has its own limitations. In the short term, ie in the younger years of life, it can be a vitamin for joyful living but in middle age and beyond it can become a toxic start to a guaranteed future for heart problems.

Leaders/managers who become stressed and anxious ensure that they continue to pass on adequate doses each day to their colleagues, by means of strange behavioral responses. At the first sign of showing an opinion that either challenges or negates their point of view, they will lose their shirt in public and create an unhealthy spectacle, weakening and overpowering the judgment of their reporting, and thus moving towards making the entire environment toxic. Of course there are many in the corporate and business world, who have unabashedly subscribed to popular dialogue, from the Hindi film, “Tension Lin Ka Nahi, Ini Ka” (loosely translated, Don’t stress but give it to others). Those who practice this with the full knowledge of themselves that this despicable management position is essentially sadists, take pleasure in causing pain to others.

Supervisors who choose to keep deadlines too short for task completion, with total disregard for determining how much work input is required to achieve goals, are those who contribute to maintaining a high level of stress in the environment. These types are categorized, albeit erroneously, as masters of difficult tasks; Rather, they bully companies and lack the knowledge and competence to know how long it takes to produce good work. A true challenging task master is someone who assigns work/tasks, including stressful tasks, to his teammates, and follows them up regularly, with full assistance through direct involvement in completing the task and by making the environment, an enabling environment.

These are motivational impulses, not stress. Leaders and managers may be adherents of perfection but they should not be tyrants or villains, who through improper behavior, whether intentionally or unintentionally, help drug companies sell them for antidepressants or tranquilizers.
