20:00 Previously on ‘American Idol’, the Top 7 members performed in America’s Vote. After Seacrest announced the top 5 players, we said goodbye to Christian Guardino And Jay. Who will shine brightest tonight? Let’s go!
8:12 PM The evening begins with a reel highlighting Carrie’s epic beautiful career. She was really enjoying the career dream that all these contestants were hoping for. Each artist will sing one song from Carrie’s songbook tonight. Huntergirl comes out on top with the song Undo It, and Carrie teaches the aspiring artist how to strut and bring oomph to this song. For a live performance, Huntergirl makes her way between the audience and onto the stage. It’s an uptempo song that has more appeal than heart, but it’s actually one of Huntergirl’s best vocals of the season. At the end of the show, Huntergirl holds her fist in the air and looks as if a ton of bricks have been lifted off her shoulders. Lionel says, “There’s nothing better than owning a stage. It was amazing!” Katie says, “You invited us to your party.” She also calls it “best performance.” Luke muttered through some compliments, he might be more prepared for the next performance, but he loved it.
8:22 pm – Leah Marilyn He next sings “I’ll Stand by You,” a song that Carrie covered at an inspiring charity event. Carrie admits that she struggled to find her own art even after becoming an ‘Idol’, but Leah really got it. Leah says her 8-year-old self is “trembling inside.” Leah looks great. I really think she has the best voice in the competition. You can never fault Leah for being anyone else and she pours her emotions into every lyric. Katie can’t believe how Leah reinvented the song. Lionel describes Lea as a great “fashion designer” and says her delivery was “just right”.
8:30 pm – Next is Fritz Hager, who returned to the studio after the match with COVID-19. He will sing “I Want To Remember”, a song Carrie collaborated with need to rise. I don’t think this was a great song choice, but I do think that Carrie Underwood’s songwriters might be the most struggle for men in this contest. He’s just kind of forgetful and his singing just doesn’t amaze me. It might be a little hoarse. Anyway, he’s still my pick to win this season, so I think it’ll be safe even though that wasn’t his best performance. Luke calls it a “wonderful interpretation” of the song. Lionel says Fritz has the ability to change gears from song to song and congratulates him on his career. Katie describes it as “effortless cool.”
8:42 pm – Noah Thompson He will sing “Very Young”. He was too sick to be personally in his mentor moment with Carrie, but at least he’s living in the studio for his performance tonight. Carrie relates to Noah’s story and is torn by their similarities. Noah became more comfortable on stage, but didn’t provide his best vocal during the first half of the song. He picks it up at the end and I still think this kid has the charisma to break into the ending. Lionel says Noah is actually a “real person.” Not sure about the other contestants. Katie says people are obsessed with Noah and that he gets better every week.
8:54 pm – Nikolina Close the curry clip with the “Blown Away” lid. She drops it and turns it into a song, which Carrie appreciates. For the performance, Nikolina sings the version that Carrie fans are familiar with. It’s not a song, but the power is still there. It’s kind of all over the place with the song off and it’s entering more plays than the song asks for. It wasn’t my favorite performance from Nikolina. Katie completes the fan that blows Nikolina’s hair and head. Lionel loves her attitude and asks Nikolina to “stay in this pocket”.
9:09 pm – Phineas He stops to sing his new song “Naked” before the competition resumes. Then Leah Marlene took the stage again to perform “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” a trip. I think it is exceptional. I love the choices she made and how she changed the song, but I don’t think I would have chosen the song for her. Luke calls it “refreshing and fun.” Lionel says she has a career now. Katie loves seeing Leah’s teeth! Things are getting worse in this competition.
9:20 pm – HunterGirl is next with the performance of “Girl Crush” Little Big Town. The opening chorus is executed perfectly and this is a great choice of song. Lionel describes her voice as “quite clear” and says HunterGirl has the rest of her life to enjoy her career. Katie says she has a broken girl and that her nieces are voting for HunterGirl. Luke says she is in star mode.
9:33 pm – Fritz is ready for his second round singing “Youngblood” 5 seconds of summer. When I watch these contestants, Fritz is the one I can instantly see as a true pop star. He can stand next to Ed Sheeran and fit in. When he sings contemporary songs like this he confirms this thought. It works with the audience like a pro and looks great. Katie asks, “Has this been up your sleeve the whole time?” Luke needs the show to remove a video of him saying “no” to Fritz in his audition. The crowd is crazy for this kid.
9:43 pm – Nikolina then sings the song “All I Ask” Adele. It’s a great song for her. Adele has covered before, but she was way back during the Hollywood Showstoppers tour. It’s a sonic force that can easily push it to the end. This Top 5 is very close! I really have no idea which one I’m going home with. I love the way Nicolina let her tear off in the end with no regard for perfection. It looks raw, but it’s still the key. Lionel calls it an “American Idol” treasure moment. Katie says Nikolina didn’t come here to play!
9:53 PM – Noah’s last chance to prove he deserves a place at the end is “Working Man” Larry Fleet. This is his best sound ever. How does he lose his place in the end after this? Wonderful. This might be the 5 closest I can remember. Lionel encourages everyone to vote for Noah if they want to see more. He “passed that test,” Katie says. Luke says that Noah can keep any room in whatever world he is in. Who will reach the top three? I could see which group of them were passing by! We’ll find out the results in a few minutes.
9:59 PM The results are in and Seacrest announces the top three: HunterGirl, Noah, and Leah! That means we lost Fritz and Nicolina tonight. I was shocked that Fritz came home, I thought the audience would love him tonight. Perhaps Nikolina gave the best vocal performance of the night. Well the top 3 guys deserve it so much and I could have seen this play out with any group of runners at the end. Congratulations to HunterGirl, Noah, and Leah!
