With Apple discontinuing the original HomePod last year, users were excited about a new iteration of the company’s larger smart speaker. Although its mini version is slowly expanding globally, it feels that Apple’s audio ecosystem is lacking in a more powerful speaker.
With new rumors all around us, it’s possible that the company will soon reveal a new HomePod. Here’s what we know so far.
New HomePod design
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo He said in May 2022 that the potential new HomePod will likely still be the design people already know. Describing the new smart speaker, Kuo said, “There may not be much innovation in hardware design.”
While the original model had a pretty good look and amazing sound capabilities, it wouldn’t matter if the new model had the same design.
Another possibility for a new version has been rumored before BloombergMark Gorman for a while. The journalist says the new HomePod will be a mix between Apple TV, smart speaker and FaceTime.
Apple seems to be getting to know this, and is developing a home camera hub device from the Apple TV, HomePod, and FaceTime for release around 2023. Will this version finally improve Apple’s offerings in the living room? Only time will prove it. But if the next big renovation doesn’t go well, it might be time for Apple to consider putting the Apple TV on the same shelf as other living room products like the high-end iPod HiFi and HomePod.
Features: U1 chip, Dolby Atmos, lossless support, more
So far, it is not known what features the new HomePod could have, although one can guarantee that it will have AirPlay 2 compatibility, Lossless and Dolby Atmos support, and deeper integration with all Apple devices.
It would also be nice if this product features a U1 chip to quickly transfer songs between iPhone and smart speaker and eARC compatibility so that it can be used as the main TV speaker connected to Apple TV 4K.
9to5MacFilipe Espósito from Filipe Espósito believes that the must-have feature of this product is the true surround sound mode. He explains:
Because HomePod supports Dolby Atmos, a technology that enables 3D sound, True Surround mode will take the experience of using the product as TV speakers to the next level.
Imagine if you could fit four HomePods in your living room, each serving as a separate audio channel. Or even if there was an option to set up a 5.1 surround system with a larger HomePod as a subwoofer would be a killer.
How much does a new HomePod cost?
If one of the reasons the original HomePod didn’t sell well was its price — Apple even cut it from $350 to $300 at some point — the new HomePod will likely cost between $100 and $300.
It all depends on the features and hardware that Apple will offer. While a new product that combines a smart speaker with an Apple TV can certainly approach $300, the smart speaker probably only costs about $200 because Apple is still selling the HomePod mini for $99.
When will Apple release a new HomePod
last year, BloombergThis new Apple TV + HomePod product will be launched as soon as possible in 2023, said Mark Gorman.
Although these products may be different, analyst Ming Chi-Kuo believes that a new HomePod will be launched in late 2022 or early 2023.
“Apple will release a new version of the HomePod in 4Q22-1Q23, and there may not be much innovation in hardware design.”
So far, these are the rumors of a new iteration of Apple in a smart speaker device. 9to5MacZac Hall from Zac wrote why we’re excited to unveil a new HomePod soon:
Larger HomePods are great for the living room, while smaller versions are more convenient around the home. Hopefully, Apple has found a way to get closer to the original HomePod in terms of quality, but without the hefty price tag that limited its appeal to the masses.
