What is Leaf Golf? A primer on the controversial new circuit

The golf thing that Moon has heard about for a while is finally here. Maybe you’ve heard that it’s controversial, or that some famous gamer – Phil Mickelson? Dustin Johnson? Ricky Fowler? – You may or may not participate, or there is a lot of money on the table. But now is the time to start thinking about whether or not you need to take care of it.

The first LIV Golf International Series event begins on Thursday. Here’s what you need to know:

What is lev?

The LIV Golf International Series is a junior league led by former Australian golf star Greg Norman and aims to challenge the long-running reign of the PGA Tour. This endeavor is controversial for multiple reasons, including that it is backed by Saudi funding and plans to stop at two courses owned by Donald Trump.

The eight tournament tournament will feature seven regular season events and a single team championship in late October. Play begins in London on Thursday. The remaining stations are in Portland, Oregon, New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, Bangkok, Saudi Arabia and Miami.

LIV is backed by an investment arm, LIV Golf Investments, of which Norman is CEO.

Why is it called “Liv”?

LIV is the Roman number for 54, which is the number of holes per course (more on those next). It’s also the score a player shoots if he flies every hole on the Par-72.

What is the shape?

Each tournament will be a three-round, 54-hole competition with 48 players and no deductions. Events feature a gun start (each player starts at the same time, but in a different hole) and a team element.

The single event will be recorded as normal, by playing the hit.

For the team event, players will be divided into 12 groups of four based on the draft week of each tournament. Each team will have a designated LIV captain who will choose the other three teammates.

The best two-hit results during the first two rounds of each team will be counted. For the final round, the best three points will be counted. The team with the lowest combined total after 54 holes will be selected as the winner. The captain will select the squad each week and choose which scores will be counted.

The team tournament will be a knockout match over four days and four rounds.

Who are the most prominent names involved?

Dustin Johnson Initial field address For the inaugural event in London. johnson’s post It came as a surprise after he said in February that he would not be on the LIV golf circuit and would commit to the PGA Tour.

But on June 6, the organizers announced that Phil Mickelson would be launching in London. TThe six-time main winner will receive a leave of absence from the PGA Tour afterwards Apologies for the controversial comments He was made in support of the Revolutionaries series and has not participated since the Saudi International in early February.

Taylor Gotsch, Matt Jones, Sergio Garcia, Kevin Na, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter, Hudson Swafford and Lee Westwood are among the other notable names. Rumors are circulating about the possibility of Ricky Fowler joining as well.

Could these guys get off the PGA Tour and not be in a major?

It is not yet clear exactly what penalty members of the PGA Tour could face for their participation in the LIV. a tour issued a statement on June 1 Confirmation that the members were not authorized to participate in the series and that these Anyone who “violates the tournament regulations” is subject to disciplinary action. The Golfers’ Association Tour said golfers were told on May 10 that regulations prevented them from participating.

Mickelson intends to continue playing in the big companies, is He said In a statement announcing his joining LIV Golf.

Last week, Kevin Na became the first player to quit – at least, publicly – from the PGA Tour rather than face potential discipline.

“If I exercise my right to choose where and when I play golf, I will not be able to remain a PGA Tour player without facing disciplinary action and legal action from the PGA Tour,” Na, world number 33, said. Books on social media.

Dominoes are starting to fall with sponsors, too. Royal Bank of Canada has become the first sponsor to publicly withdraw its support from participants in LIV Golf, ending its relationship with Johnson and fellow tour golfer Graeme McDowell.

The bank is sponsoring the RBC Canadian Open in Ontario, which is scheduled to take place on the same weekend as the LIV’s opening, as well as the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, SC in April.

Wait, how much money is involved?

A total of $255 million in prize money will be awarded across the eight tournaments. Each regular season event will have a $25 million purse – $20 million for individual prizes and $5 million for the top three teams.

The top three after the seven regular season events – among those who play at least four – will also share an additional $30 million ($18 million, $8 million, and $4 million each). Finally, another $50 million will be awarded in the multiplayer tournament.

One key element is that no contestant will return home empty-handed from the championship. The winner gets $4 million, and the last place winner gets $120,000. (For comparison: The US Open Prize, the largest portfolio of the Big Four, awards $12.5 million in prize money, and the winner gets $2.25 million.)

And there’s more than just cash prizes on the table at LIV. was johnson It said He offered a $125 million contract just to announce his commitment to the new league. Norman told the Washington Post that LIV offered Tiger Woods an “amazingly high” (think nine digits high) sum to sign in.

Norman said LIV Golf Investments is With a view to putting together a total of $2 billion in sports between 2023 and 2025, which eventually increased the number of events to 14.

How long is the schedule and does it conflict with the PGA Tour?

The schedule runs from June through October and does not conflict with any existing majors. However, the first three LIV tournaments coincide with the PGA Tour events already scheduled for the 2021-22 calendar.

Do we think this is sustainable?

Hugh Kellenberger, Managing Editor of Senior Golf: The Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, has essentially unlimited resources to make this work. LIV Golf has happened and will continue to happen. The question is whether or not he is a direct competitor to the PGA Tour, or a sideshow event that occurs but is not in direct conflict.

There will inevitably be lawsuits that will limit a professional golfer’s ability to play both rounds. If these allowances work from a LIV perspective, just remember that no one has ever bet on professional athletes taking the biggest payouts imaginable. If they are not, the future of LIV will depend in large part on attracting more names at the level of Johnson.

how to watch

LIV is currently scheduled to air on YouTube, Facebook, and LIVGolf.com; It does not currently have a US-based streaming partner. the athletes Richard Deitch said he can’t see Any network that has a long-standing relationship with the PGA Tour (CBS, NBC, ESPN, etc.) goes nowhere near this series.
