How to save money on Nintendo Switch games

Wachiwit /

If you own a Nintendo Switch, you are probably used to keeping an eye on the eShop for good deals. But with so many titles on the Switch, it can be hard to keep track of them. Fortunately, there is more than one way to save money on Switch games.

Track games for online shopping deals

The Switch eShop has a thousand or more games on sale at any one time, which means there are plenty of deals to be had. Searching by trawling through these nicknames to separate the wheat from the chaff can be time-consuming and often seem like more hassle than it’s worth.

You can add games to your Switch wishlist by clicking the “Heart” icon on the Game Store page. You can then see your wishlist by clicking on your user icon in the top right corner of the Switch eShop and selecting Wishlist. Unfortunately, there is no original way to notify you when these games go on sale (as there is on Steam).

Fortunately, there is a service that can highlight the best eShop deals and allow you to track games and get notified when a sale arrives. DekuDeals is a Switch owner’s best friend when it comes to finding cheap games. In addition to tracking eShop sales, the service tracks actual sales in some regions (including the United States).

DekuDeals information page

On the homepage, you’ll find several categories for the hottest deals and the latest price drops, helping to highlight the best online shopping deals. Click on a game to see its price history depicted on a graph, with a record of the lowest price and number of times it was put up for sale. Use the ‘Add to’ box to add the game to your Wishlist, which you can set alerts for future sales.

You’ll need an account to get the most out of DekuDeals and use the notification functionality, but it’s worth signing up and transferring your entire eShop wishlist to the service if you’re waiting for certain sales. DekuDeals is also a great way to learn about titles you might not have tried otherwise if they weren’t for sale.

Follow gaming deals trends

Another way to stay on top of gaming deals (especially for titles that aren’t on your radar) is to pay attention to trends. The best example of this is the release of a sequel, which often drives previous games in the series up for sale in an effort to cash in on the publicity a new game generates.

There are other, more obvious seasonal deals, too, like cheap Halloween horror games and obligatory Black Friday bombings (act fast, these deals usually don’t last long).

If you find a title you like that’s for sale and has DLC available, there’s a good chance there’s a deal on DLC or the “ultimate” version as well (which includes any released DLC).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Poster

Know that it’s very rare for Nintendo first-party titles to sell for more than 30%. This includes titles like Mario Kart 8 DeluxeAnd The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild And Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The lowest price for this stuff is usually somewhere around the $50 mark, so it’s not worth hanging out for better deals if you’re tempted.

Buy used cartridges

One way to save money on physical games (rather than digital purchases in the online store) is to increase your favorite used listings like eBay and Facebook Marketplace. You’ll find a range of prices, plus you’ll be able to bid on titles to see how receptive the sellers are.

It is not uncommon to find a seller trying to alter a set of games or assemble additional consoles or peripherals (such as A ring fit for adventure Ring-Con accessory) at a much lower price than it would cost to purchase them individually. Follow the usual precautions when buying online to avoid the kind of scams that have plagued Facebook Marketplace.

Physical Switch games are expensive when buying new games and retain their value over time. Expect to pay more for a used Switch title than you would for an Xbox or PlayStation game. One advantage of switch cartridges is that they are more durable than discs because they are not prone to scratches (although damage to the contacts can occur).

Use your online Nintendo Switch membership to play old titles

If you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can access the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System apps that provide access to old NES and SNES titles as part of your membership. This includes classics like Super Mario Kart (SNES), Super Mario 3 (miscellaneous) , fox star (SNES) and three donkey kong (nes) addresses.

There are more than 100 to choose from in total, and they include add-ons like online play and a rewind feature that lets you try out sections over and over again.

If you go for the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass, you can also access Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis titles like Super Mario 64 (N64), Yoshi’s story (N64), Streets of Rage (Genesis), the Echo Dolphin (origin). Find out what else you get with each Switch Online category.

Don’t forget to play titles and demos for free

Free-to-play titles get a bad rap and a lot of it for a good reason. Much of it is centered around the micro-transactions of the ongoing purchase. It’s designed to make you invest just enough to want to play, before putting up a wall that can only be solved with cash. But not all of them are bad, and many of the best have found a home on the Switch.

Most of these games be After your money, but many of them can be enjoyed without spending a penny (or by making thoughtful purchases, here and there). Some of the best are:

  • the war – A first-person shooter reminiscent of Saucepan
  • Rocket League – The smash hit “Car Football” is now free
  • quarrel – a Super Smash Bros. cloning
  • Pac-Man 99 – A competitive battle royale version of the classic arcade
  • pokemon unite – MOBA is set in Pokemon being
  • Apex Legends – Arguably the best battle royale shooter on the market
  • emergency shelter – Bethesda’s sim vault construction management
  • It is an electronic game – The biggest game in the world, probably

You can also find demos available for many titles, which you can filter using the “Search” option on the Nintendo Switch Online Store. Just click on “Program with demo available” and browse.

Who doesn’t like cheap games?

The Switch might not be the most budget friendly console, but there are plenty of deals to make if you know where to look.

If you play games on PC, you might think Steam is the best place to find cheap games, but there are alternative game marketplaces that can save you some money.
