Unlike the past two years, WWDC 2022 will include an in-person event at Apple Park on June 6. Although it’s much smaller than what Apple offered before the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the first time Apple has welcomed developers back to Apple Park for any kind of in-person event.
With apps now open for this year’s WWDC in-person gathering, head down below to find out everything you need to know.
WWDC 2022 event details in person
When Apple first announced WWDC 2022 last month, its press release described the event as a “complete online format.” This is Technically True, seeing as Apple will offer all the same online experiences this year as it did in 2020 and 2022. This includes things like virtual sessions, keynote labs, State of the Union presentations, digital lounges, and more.
Hidden in the press release, however, was the notable news that WWDC 2022 would include an in-person component for developers and students at Apple.
According to Apple, this will be a “special day for developers and students” at Apple Park. Attendees will gather to watch the opening keynote of the WWDC and State of the Union videos. Developers will also be able to “explore the all-new Developer Center” in Apple Park, which the company has not officially revealed to the public.
We’re hosting a special all-day experience at Apple Park on June 6 to kick off WWDC22. Get together with others in the developer community to watch the keynote and State of the Union videos for platforms alongside Apple engineers and experts, explore the all-new Developer Center, and much more. We can’t wait to get in touch in person.
This celebration marks the start of an inspiring week of sessions, labs and lounges – all online and with more action than ever before.
How to apply to attend WWDC 2022 in person
Apple has officially opened applications for this small “Special Event at Apple Park” on June 6. The company stated that the event is open to members of the Apple Developer Program, the Apple Developer Enterprise Program, and Swift Student Challenge 2022 applicants.
Eligible developers and students can apply starting today through May 11 at 9:00 AM PT. Apple says the invitations will be “allocated through a random selection process” and are non-transferable. All applicants will be notified of their status by May 12 at 6:00 PM PT.
You can apply to attend WWDC 2022 in person by heading to the Apple website here. The application process simply consists of logging in with your Apple ID.
This is Apple’s first in-person event of any kind since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Although this event is significantly smaller in size than previous WWDC events, the company still has some COVID-19 precautions in place. This includes evidence of a negative COVID-19 test no more than three days prior to the event.
As it stands now, Apple says masks are currently optional, and will not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Those policies can change as soon as June 6, and Apple says it will “detail about the latest requirements for attendance prior to the event.”
Even if this is a smaller version of an in-person WWDC event than in previous years, it’s worth noting that Apple is inviting people back to Apple Park for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Paving the way for more personal events
There’s still a lot we don’t know about this “special event,” including details about exactly where it will take place at Apple. This likely depends on how many developers and students Apple invites, but possibilities include the Apple Park Visitor Center, the Steve Jobs Theater, and inside the central loop at Apple’s Rainbow Theatre.
It is also possible that the entire event will be held in the aforementioned Developer Center, which we know very little about.
