New Study Published in Clinical Cell Reports Further Checks Potential of Urolithin A Supplementation in Supporting Muscle Health – Benzinga

Bridgewater, New JerseyAnd May 17 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Nestlé Health Science, the global leader in nutritional sciences, has announced the results of the Atlas trial have been published in Medicine Cell Reports. Data show improvement in leg muscle strength in those who took Mitopure supplement daily for four months. Mitopure, a proprietary form of Urolithin A produced by Amazentis, works by supporting cells’ ability to regenerate their own power plants, the mitochondria. The decline in mitochondrial function occurs during aging and is associated with decreased physical performance such as slower walking speed, muscle fatigue, and loss of strength. Using nutritional supplements to support mitochondrial health is a new approach to help address age-related decline in muscle and cellular health.

As people age, a gradual decline in muscle mass and strength is normal, and environmental factors such as diet and exercise can affect the rate at which these declines occur. Stimulating mitophagy, removing and recycling dysfunctional mitochondria to enhance mitochondrial synthesis, can help improve mitochondrial function and promote overall cellular health. Previous research shows that Mitopore — which is molecularly identical to a natural gut metabolite derived from the microbiome produced from foods such as pomegranate, nuts and berries — activates mitophagy.

The ATLAS trial was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that examined the effect of daily supplementation with Mitopure (500 mg or 1000 mg) or placebo for 4 months on muscle performance in 88 stable adults aged 40-64 years. The trial end points included muscle strength, exercise endurance, and physical performance. The results are an important finding in muscle health research and are as follows:

  • Improvements in hamstring muscle strength were significantly greater among participants who took Mitopure daily at 500 mg (12% increase vs. baseline) or 1,000 mg (10% increase vs. baseline) compared to placebo. This is key, because maintaining muscle tone is important for healthy aging.
  • Individuals consuming 1,000 mg of Mitopure daily experienced clinically meaningful improvements in aerobic endurance (10% increase in peak oxygen consumption). [VO2]), and physical performance (33 m improvement in 6-min walking test), from baseline to 4 months.
  • Mitopure supplementation has enhanced cellular health as it relates to mitochondrial efficiency and reduced inflammatory markers, both of which are important for optimal muscle function.
  • Mitopure supplements have also been found to be safe and well tolerated.

Furthermore, the ATLAS results are based on data from recent trials examining the benefits of Mitopure supplementation. A randomized, crossover trial demonstrated improved bioavailability of Mitopure compared to food sources of Urolithin A, since two-thirds of individuals do not have the appropriate microbiome to make UA from their diet alone. A randomized controlled trial of adults aged 65-90 years found that daily supplementation of 1,000 mg of Mitopure significantly improved hand and leg muscle endurance at two months. Taken together, these studies show that Mitopure can positively impact muscle and cellular health in middle-aged and older adults, which is impressive given that the age-related decline in muscle mass and strength can begin as early as 40 years of age.
