Read and know all about the new foldable device from Huawei.

HUAWEI Mate Xs 2: Display and Design

Most of the foldable devices available in the market now look the same. It has a small cover screen on the outside with a foldable screen inside. The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is a breath of fresh air as it brings a form factor that we don’t often see in the foldable market. The Mate Xs 2 features a fold-out display just like its predecessor – which our Roland thinks isn’t a very wise choice.

Speaking of the screen, the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 features a 6.5-inch OLED display that can open into a 7.8-inch screen. The screen has a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels and supports a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The pixel density is also very high at 424 ppi. HUAWEI says it has added an anti-reflective nano-optical layer on top that keeps vision clear, even in direct sunlight. When opened, the Mate Xs 2 is just 5.4mm thick. It is also one of the lightest foldable available, weighing in at just 255g.

One of the concerns of foldable devices with a screen that folds out is the exposure of the screen that folds towards the back of the phone. This raises a lot of concern as the screen can pick up a lot of scratches. However, HUAWEI has addressed this concern and bundles a protective case in the box with the foldable covering “The back side” of the screen when folded. When the screen is folded with the case on, you can use the Mate Xs 2 just like any regular Android smartphone. But when you want to use full screen real estate, you can remove the cover and open the screen.

HUAWEI says the Xs 2 features an all-new Falcon Wing hinge. This new folding mechanism allows for perfect alignment between the screen and the hinge, all while improving the durability of the device. The company claims that the Mate Xs 2 is 2.5 times better in terms of drop resistance and 2.8 times better in terms of shock resistance than the last generation Xs. The company says this is made possible thanks to the new hinge mechanism and the advanced MIM steel used in its construction.

HUAWEI Mate Xs 2: Cameras

Moving on to the cameras, the Mate Xs 2 features a triple camera setup on the back. This setup includes a 50MP primary camera, a 13MP wide-angle lens with 120° FoV, and an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The punch-hole on the front houses a 10.7MP selfie camera for the smartphone. Like the recent flagship smartphones from HUAWEI, the Mate Xs 2 also supports HUAWEI XD Optics technology. HUAWEI says this technology enables cameras to capture more light, while improving the level of detail.

With a foldable display that features a fold-out display, you can use the main foldable cameras (in folded mode) to take precise selfies. The 8MP telephoto lens enables 3x optical zoom, so you can get close to the object without missing any detail.

HUAWEI Mate Xs 2: Processor, Battery and Software

Despite being a foldable flagship in mid-2022, the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 4G processor instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The Snapdragon 888 processor is, still, a powerful octa-core chipset that features one ARM Cortex-X1 registered One Kryo Prime core at 2.84GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.42GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz.

Although the Snapdragon 888 will be able to handle all the daily tasks with ease, the only downside to this chipset is that it does not support 5G networks. However, HUAWEI has tried to make up for the lack of 5G by improving wireless Wi-Fi connectivity. The Mate Xs 2 is the first smartphone to support tri-band Wi-Fi.

Supporting Mate Xs 2 is a large 4600mAh battery cell that supports 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge technology. The company claims that the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 can be charged from 0 to 90% in less than 30 minutes. In addition, HUAWEI has added a graphene liquid cooling system to keep the smartphone’s brain cool. However, there is no support for wireless charging.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 runs a specialized version of EMUI 12, which is based on the latest Android 12 operating system from Google. Icons, display, and text are set automatically when the screen is opened. Thanks to the large 7.8-inch screen, you can also see up to 12 people simultaneously during a video call on the Mate Xs 2. EMUI 12 also enables smart interactions such as split screen, multi-window, and floating app windows. Like other HUAWEI devices, there are no Google apps present on the board.

HUAWEI Mate Xs 2: Price, Colors and Availability

The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 was unveiled in China last month. The company has since confirmed that the device will be available in global markets from next month, i.e. June. However, unlike China, where the company has launched three variants of the foldable model, HUAWEI offers only one to global markets.

In Europe, only the 8GB RAM and 512GB internal storage version will be sold. It will be sold for the hefty price of 1999 euros (about 1,700 pounds). That’s well below the price the Mate X2 was offered at but still higher than Samsung’s foldable devices (which are available at around £1,500). The foldable device will be available in three colors: white, black and purple.

What’s in the box?

HUAWEI is one of the few companies that still includes some essential accessories, tools, and manuals in the box. In addition to the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 itself, the box comes with a USB Type-C cable, a 66W fast charger, a SIM ejection tool, a quick start guide, an official case, and a protective film pre-applied to the foldable device.
