‘We almost missed our flight’: How do travelers feel about delays at Pearson Airport? We went to Terminal 1 and asked

Toronto Pearson International Airport recently grabbed the headlines For its insanely long lines in security and customs, which the airport is putting up with the challenges of recruitment and Covid screening requirements. Just how bad is that? We camped at the international arrivals and asked them.

Seth Meyer, 23 years old; With his sister, Alexandra Mayer, 24, engineering coordinator at Novocol Pharma

Where did you come from?
Alexandra: We are back from vacation in Fort Lauderdale. We were meeting my dad and grandmother. We got here an hour and a quarter ago, and we’re still waiting to leave. Our sister was randomly selected to get tested for Covid, so I guess we’re stuck here for a while longer.

Did you expect this?
Alexandra: Before we even got on the plane, a few of my friends warned us who said, “Wait times are terrible — get ready,” so yes. I’m disappointed about the wait – I was hoping it was better – but, frankly, going to Fort Lauderdale from Pearson last week was a lot worse. It took us an hour and a half to get past Pearson security and we almost missed our flight. We got there in time. Fort Lauderdale Airport was the fastest everywhere.

Where have you had the longest wait?
Alexandra: Customs was fine this time, but we stopped waiting at baggage claim for a good hour. We were afraid of losing our luggage.

Any advice for travelers heading to Pearson?
Alexandra: Travel with good company. It keeps the conversation flowing.

Seth: Find ways to have fun: You need one of these new bags Which has wheels that you can ride on.

Hetty van de Woo, 23 years old; Tijmen van Loon, 21 years old; Professional track cyclists

Where did you come from?
Tejman: Holland. We traveled straight from Amsterdam for the Cycling Word Cup at the racetrack in Milton, Ontario. We’ve been waiting for two hours and fifteen minutes and just got a message telling us we’ll be here waiting another 50 minutes.

Where have you had the longest wait?
Hetty: It was very fast at customs, but we are waiting to receive our bikes. Our team has 25 bikes packed, and none have been returned yet.

Tejman: I think some of our contestants were also selected for random Covid tests, so we’re waiting for that as well.

Is this what you expected?
Hetty: It always takes a little extra time to get our bikes once we clear customs, but not that long.

Tejman: We are coming from another competition in Scotland, and the wait for the bikes wasn’t that bad. Otherwise, the airport is well organized. I would rate Pearson higher than most airports, but not just to get our bikes back.

Any advice for travelers heading to Pearson?
Tejman: It’s easier if you’re traveling with a group. Have fun with each other and laugh well. Get some coffee and you’ll be fine.

Where did you come from?
Barcelona, Spain. I live near there. I’ve always wanted to visit Canada. I work in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

How long did you wait between landing and leaving Pearson?
One hour.

Where have you had the longest wait?
It took an hour to get to customs.

Did you expect it?
Think. I’ve seen worse. People here seem to think this is a bad waiting time, but it’s not as bad as other places. I traveled a lot during the pandemic. For work, I traveled to many countries in Europe – Uruguay and TurkeyAnd among them. Barcelona Airport in particular is very complex. You have to wait, take off your shoes at the security checkpoints. Today is nothing compared to that kind of waiting.

Where did you come from?
Mexico.

How long did you wait between landing and leaving Pearson?
I landed 50 minutes ago. It wasn’t too bad, probably because I landed in the middle of the afternoon on the weekend. It was actually better than I expected – I’ve been reading a bunch of articles recently that made me think I’d be looking at hours of waiting time.

Where have you had the longest wait?
The only thing that was annoying was that they made us wait in the plane, and only allowed 50 people to leave at a time. It was a big plane, so we’d been sitting there waiting for Pearson to come in for a while. Security probably helped prepare us, so maybe it was a good idea, because 50 minutes in general isn’t too bad.

Any advice for travelers heading to Pearson?
Bring your phone or a book. My friend recommended me a book, Brave New World Which I read when I was a kid in school. I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but it turned out to be a good read. It’s a different experience this time.

Sebastian Chikaiza, 19, is a student at the Toronto School of Management

Where did you come from?
Ecuador. I was on vacation there for a few weeks to see my family.

How long did you wait between landing and leaving Pearson?
40 minutes.

Is this what you expected?
Actually I was expecting worse. Earlier in Covid, it was more chaotic. It’s much better now, with restrictions lifted.

I flew from Pearson three times during Covid, and the airports early in the pandemic were chaotic. Just line by line. The last time I came here it took two hours to go through customs and get Covid checks, and submit a PCR test. There are a lot less testing now, so I think it really helps with the wait times.

In normal times I think Pearson is one of the best airports I’ve been to. It is very organized. Felt like those times today.

Where has your wait been the longest?
Customs can still be improved. I spent most of my forty minutes there, just waiting for my passport to be shown and to cross. I felt it was probably due to a lack of staff. That was kind of annoying.

Any advice for travelers heading to Pearson?
Have something to eat. After the flight, you are always hungry – you are also tired, you just want to leave. If you’re full, you’re chilling.

Lynn Valekett, 48; Jason Griffin, 49, UPS delivery clerk

Where did you come from?
Seattle. Jason from here and me from here are finally getting married after being postponed twice due to Covid.

How long did you wait between landing and leaving Pearson?
45 minutes.

Where has your wait been the longest since landing?
When we arrived, they put the plane on the runway for a while. Then customs were kinda slow.

Did you expect it?
kind of. This airport is not the best — there seems to be little communication between the staff. Right before you enter the access doors they ask us to take out our passport again, then slows everything down. If you have gone through customs, you have already cleared it. But overall, I was expecting long wait times, due to the news coverage. Forty-five minutes isn’t too bad.

What is your first tip for staying in long lines?
Just be patient and hope the staff gets in touch with where you’re supposed to be. Also, just plan ahead and keep in mind that it will take a little longer. This was a lot better than flying earlier in Covid, so we have to be patient with the travel, and be glad the wait times are improving.
