Prince Charles did not wear a mask.

Federal government employees are still required to wear masks at work but only in places where social distancing cannot be maintained, such as elevators or stairwells.

Masks are no longer mandatory in many indoor public places in Canada but are still recommended by Public Health Canada.

Mr Trudeau wore a face mask outside when he met Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall shortly after their arrival in Newfoundland and Labrador yesterday.

Again, he removed it shortly thereafter to give a speech at the official welcome party.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall met a number of dignitaries, local leaders and members of the public indoors during their time in Canada and only a few wore masks.

Mr Trudeau said it was “a great pleasure” to welcome Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall to Canada.

He said: ‘I just want to say how happy I am to welcome His Royal Highness to Ottawa. I almost don’t need to introduce the place to you, I’ve been here many times over many years and decades.

“It is great to be able to sit down with you to talk about so many things that are happening in Canada and to continue the work you have been doing on the environment and so many different issues that are important. It is a pleasure to welcome you here.

After Mr. Trudeau repeated his words of welcome in French, the Prince answered, without restraint, in fluent French.

Then, in English, he said, “Apart from anything else, it’s always a pleasure to come to Canada. It seems we coincided with very nice weather for a change.”

We have met all kinds of people and I must say I am very impressed with the Canadian approach in welcoming the many people who have been displaced from all these conflict-ridden parts of the world, and we have met a few of them today.

“And your generosity as a government, but also so many communities and individuals taking care of the refugees, it’s just amazing how welcoming everyone is. So thank you really for being able to visit this massive country in some small bits.

The meeting took place in the large, luxuriously furnished drawing room of the Rideau Hall, which is used as a formal meeting room for guests before and after the events.

The room is also used to entertain heads of state and their wings.

During the Victorian era, women retired to the large drawing room where they sipped tea, sewed, played music and flew. It was also here that the family received guests.

The artwork was chosen to decorate its walls by Canadian women.

The Prince of Wales has previously met Prime Minister Trudeau on several occasions including at COP26 and G7 last year.
