It’s the end of an era for another CW show. Riverdalea direct adaptation of Archie Comics’ most famous characters, will be discontinued after its seventh season.
Another CW television series based on the comic book has been excluded. After canceling shows like batuman And legends of tomorrowGrid decided to quit Riverdale, the direct adaptation of Archie Comics’ lovable teen gang. The show (which is currently in its sixth season) will end with season seven, expected to be released sometime in 2023.
Regarding the series’ ending, CW CEO Mark Pedowitz stated at this year’s CW scheduling and strategy press conference (via Variety): We had a long conversation with [Riverdale Executive Producer and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa], who is pleased with this news. We will treat the offer the way it deserves it. She was such a famous pop culture star, and we want to make sure she’s headed in the right direction and that’s the decision. I think they chose seven years as the right amount, and we want to do the right thing. This is a personal thing. As a fan myself. I want to do what’s appropriate for the show.”
Bedowitz also stated that he expects the final season to not be shortened.
During the same event, Archie Andrews actor KJ Apa expressed his sadness and excitement about the show’s approaching conclusion (via Deadline):
“I’m sad to say goodbye Riverdale Next season, to our sets, to our crew, to our producers, to the CW family but I can speak for everyone, for Cammy [Mendes]Cool [Sprouse]Hey Layla [Reinhart] And the rest of our cast, we’re so grateful for everyone’s support. […] For the masses, without the masses, none of this would be possible. […] I can’t say I’m going to miss dyeing my hair every week, and I’m looking forward to being myself again, but I promise you guys, last season we’re going to end it with a bang, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”
While Pedowitz stated that The Seven Seasons seemed like a good period for the show, there can Being more reasons for the network’s decision, such as the impending sale of The CW and declining viewership. According to TVLine, the series averaged 560,000 viewers per episode (including Live+7 DVR numbers). This puts Riverdale 16 out of 19 shows that aired on The CW between fall and winter 2021.
To put that number in perspective, here is a list of the least-watched episodes from each season in Riverdale (Note that the numbers are assumed not to take into account DVR viewers):
Focusing on the raw numbers (i.e. without DVR fans), there has been a steady decline in RiverdaleLess watched episodes as their seasons progress. Keep in mind, however, that the show’s dwindling audience may not be responsible for the show’s ending next year, and it could simply be, Pedowitz stated, that the creators behind the series felt it was time to end the story.
as pointed out The Hollywood ReporterAnd Riverdale He marked one of the CW’s last three shows under the network’s $1 billion deal with the streaming device. For those unaware, in 2011, The CW entered into a licensing agreement with Netflix to release its series on the platform after its original broadcast. The deal was renewed in 2016, and proved beneficial to the network. Per THR, she allowed The CW to be profitable, and gave series like Sparkle And Riverdale Greater global reach.
However, Deadline reported in 2019 that the deal expired due to the choice of CW owners – Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount – Putting their content on their own streaming services (HBO Max and Paramount+, respectively).
Riverdale It stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones and Madelaine Petsch as Cherry Blossom.
