What is mixed reality?

Augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) are both immersive technologies but they are not the same.

Mixed reality is an extension of augmented reality that allows real and virtual elements to interact in an environment.

Mixed reality maintains a connection with the real world, so it’s not quite an immersive experience like virtual reality (VR).

Zuckerberg has already said that Project Cambria will cost more than current headphones, although it is not known exactly how much they cost.

Within years, Facebook users will be able to use the platform not on their phones or computers, but by wearing a headset.

Instead of swiping a device’s screen, they’ll likely meet a Facebook friend in a shared virtual space — like a hyper-realistic simulation of another planet or an idyllic garden — and voice chat with each other’s avatars.

“It will be characterized by social presence, the feeling of being there with someone else, no matter where in the world you are,” says Mitta.

“The metaverse is still a long way off, but parts of it are already there and there’s more on the horizon.”

Meta rebranded itself in October, as part of its long-running project to transform its social media platform into the metaverse.

In a recent interview, Mark Zuckerberg said that over the next five years, people want to think of Facebook not as a social media company, but as a “metaverse” company.

This is a virtual like environment where people can work and play most of their 24 hours without leaving their homes.

And I hope, if we do that well, I think over the next five years or so, in this next chapter of our company, I think we’ll effectively transition from people who see us primarily as a social media company to being a metaverse company,” Zuckerberg said in Interview with The Verge.

Clearly, all the work we do across the apps that people use today contributes directly to this vision in terms of community building and innovators.

But this is something I spend a lot of time on, I think about a lot, we’re working on a lot. And I think it’s just a big part of the next chapter of the work that we’re going to do in the entire industry.

So what exactly is metaverse?

As Zuckerberg describes it, it’s a “vision” that covers the entire tech industry, calling it the successor to the mobile internet.

“But you can think of the metaverse as an embodied Internet, where instead of just displaying content – you’re in it,” he continued.

And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, and you have different experiences that you can’t necessarily do on a 2D app or web page, like dancing, for example, or different types of fitness.

The Facebook CEO says his vision – which he’s been working on for several months – will reach not only virtual reality, but also augmented reality, computers, mobile devices and game consoles.
