AMD 5nm Zen 4 Core architecture

AMD Zen 4 Infrastructure is the direct replacement for the current Zen 3 that powers all parts of today’s server, desktop, and mobile. Zen 4 is said to be mostly a complete overhaul of Zen 3 cores with built-in cache and higher clocks. Zen 4 is expected to result in an IPC increase of 15-24%, a single-threaded performance increase of 28-37%, and a similar multi-threaded performance increase or higher on Zen 3 cores. A key aspect of Zen 4 cores is At much higher clock speeds. Prototypes and samples have already appeared with clock speeds of up to 5.2 GHz which will play a major role in improving overall performance on Zen 3. Clock speeds are expected to get 8-14% (sustainable) increase compared to Zen 3 which we also see in recent leaks. .

Other improvements include the aforementioned doubling of the L2 cache seen in recent EPYC Genoa sample slates while keeping the same L3 cache as Zen 3. Zen 4 will also be a huge I/O improvement with PCIe 5.0, DDR5, LPDDR5 support, and more. The performance of Zen 4’s AVX-512 is also described as being comparable to Ice Lake-X at the same thread/hour and 50% better than Zen 3 at the same hours. Summing it all up, Zen 4 will present:

  • 15-24% IPC increase (over Zen 3)
  • 8-14% hourly increase (over Zen 3)
  • 28-37% ST performance increase (over Zen 3)
  • Increased MT performance as ST or higher (over Zen 3)
  • 1MB L2/4MB L3 per core (versus 512KB/4MB L3 per Zen 3 Core)
  • PCIe 5.0 support (lanes increased)
  • DDR5 / LPDDR5 memory support (DDR5-5200+)

As for products, AMD’s Zen 4 lineup will include:

  • EPYC Genoa 7004 (~Q4 2022) – A0 Silicon Taped-Out in March, B0 Testing Ongoing
  • Ryzen 7000′ Raphael (~2H 2022) – Samples are already in operation, production soon
  • Ryzen 7000 Dragon range (~Q1 2023) – Sampling is expected this year
  • Ryzen 7000 Phoenix (~Q1 2023) – Behind Genoa in the test
  • Threadripper 7000 Storm Peak (~ first half 2023) – a plan

AMD 5nm Zen 4C Core architecture

The follow-up to Zen 4 will be known as Zen 4C but it won’t be a true successor. In fact, Zen 4C is said to be a temporary solution for select customers and these are mostly found in the data center CPU segment. AMD has already confirmed that Bergamo is a product that uses Zen 4C cores designed for computing intensity and offers up to 128 cores versus 96 in Genoa with the standard Zen 4. Both the Zen 4 and Zen 4C products will be manufactured on a TSMC 5nm process node.

For EPYC Bergamo, the chip is said to feature hyper-threading support so it gets 128 cores and 256 threads. It will keep the SP5 ‘LGA 6096’ compliant socket with 12-channel memory support and the latest SDCI (Smart Data Cache Injection) and SDXI (Smart Data Acceleration Interface) drivers rumored by Genoa. Both are accelerators built inside the IOD with the former said to provide an increase in cache times from connected devices to optimal CCX in latency sensitive application while the latter is responsible for copying/moving data directly between devices without using Zen 4 cores. That the only Zen 4C product would be:

  • EPYC Bergamo 700X (~ 1 H 2023) – Bar A0 Target June 2022

AMD Zen 5 Core architecture

Moving on to Zen 5, the infrastructure is said to be as big as Zen 2 and will arrive after 11-15 months. Although there are some repercussions it might not happen, I’ll deal with it in a bit. Zen 5’s core architecture is said to be an architectural redesign, which results in an IPC increase above Zen 4 (versus Zen 3) and includes two additional changes to the data texture (IFC) and a completely reorganized cache design. Clock speeds are said to remain stable or improve slightly with chips that feature multiple accelerators and higher thread counts for consumer parts. And no, SMT4 does not happen. SMT is still bidirectional but the number of cores per chip is what will go up.

Now when the process node is reached, Zen 5 cores are expected to be manufactured on a TSMC N3 or N4P node. AMD could go both ways, but given recent reports, a 2024-2025 launch is very expected for most of the range of products. Some products may ship as early as EPYC Turin which is said to be aiming for the Q4 2023 sampling timeframe, but in addition, the vast majority of products should start shipping by Q1 or even Q2 2024. However, some products are expected to start in the Zen 5 core architecture will include:

  • EPYC Turin 700X (~2H 2023)
  • Ryzen 8000 “Granite Ridge” – (~2H 2024)
  • Ryzen 8000 “Point Strix” – (~1 hour 2025)

AMD Zen 6 Core architecture

Now overtaking the Zen 5 is where we may or may not see the use of the Zen brand by AMD for its infrastructure. It’s recent speculation but a Zen 5 replacement isn’t expected to arrive by 2025, so there’s still some time and if there is a change, AMD will definitely update its roadmap before letting consumers know what happens next. However, not much is known about Zen 6 except that it is rumored to be launched by 2025 and will come again with higher cores, clocks, new cache designs, accelerators, etc. Of course, this design could change a lot between now and launch, so let’s move on to the next part.

The MLID states that in 2025 and beyond, AMD will refocus its server and laptop portfolios to “premium” brands. This will be used to drive renewed Intel in the server and NVIDIA in the HPC/AI and mobile segment. How this will happen, we still have at least three years to wait and see.
