#DelaySonicFrontiers was briefly trending on Twitter this week, after many Sonic fans took to the social media platform to express their disappointment over the first videos featuring the game in action.

Sega partnered with IGN this month to release the first look at the upcoming open-world Sonic game. So far, a 7-minute open-world video has been posted, and another video focused on combat.

The footage appears to have received quite a bit of criticism from the most engaged fans. At the time of publication, IGN’s gameplay premiere has racked up nearly 50,000 likes on YouTube (compared to 72,000), while the fight footage has recorded 19,000 likes (compared to 35,000).

Meanwhile, thousands of users have used the hashtag #DelaySonicFrontiers on Twitter, according to the platform’s own analytics, briefly making it a trend this week.

Among the criticisms of fans of Frontiers are what they call “strict” animation, a sparse game world, and a perceived lack of momentum from the titular player character.

“Sonic Frontiers seems to have made an open world robotic game,” Wrote Youtube Lonely Jumpa. “It’s very strange. This demo of the gameplay had several dashboards in springs and automation…. I am nervous about this game. This demo does not look great.”

“I’m one of the biggest Sonic fans on the planet… [but] “This gameplay didn’t do it for me,” said ‘Stalling Sam’ in his video reaction. “Based on this video, I’m worried about the Sonic Frontiers. I was so excited, I’ve waited five years for it, and I’m not happy. I’m very, ‘I was there, I did it.'”

“If this is what Sonic will look like over the next 10 years, we’re in trouble,” he added.

Some Sega fans are calling for a demo release for Frontiers, so fans can provide appropriate feedback that can be fed into the development process.

“This is exactly what I want them to do,” Wrote User Ti. “Unspecified delay (#DelaySonicFrontiers!) in conjunction with the demo. A survey within the demo would be a good way to gauge opinions.”

Sega’s latest form is enjoying a makeover after widespread fan criticism, of course: The original film’s design for The Hedgehog was completely changed after its poor reception in trailers.

However, in response to the letter, Sven Jocelynwho is the founder of fan site Sonic Stadium and director of global publishing at IGN, said he’s less optimistic that Sega will be able to fix core fan concerns with Frontiers.

“#DelaySonicFrontiers will not work because, to me, the main concern is about its entire concept and gameplay approach; delaying to kill bugs and adding content will not address that,” he wrote.

“#SonicFrontiers seems to want a hyper-realistic Sonic game, focused on combat and drawn from the movies… and based on Sonic sports rather than physics/momentum-based gameplay. And that’s fine if that’s the goal. It’s not just a Sonic game that I wish it was in 2022.

“I will keep rating it based on its merits, if it gets fully improved between now and winter, it could be a real fun time for fans looking for that kind of thing 🙂 but the delay wouldn’t be necessary I think. Team Sonic has goals set, and he’s moving forward in this matter. Accept it.”
